Important Dates for Upcoming SOL Testing 

We want to keep you informed about the schedule for the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests that our students in grades 3-6 will be taking in May.

Please mark your calendars with the following important dates:

• Tuesday, May 6th: Math SOL (Grades 3-6) 
• Tuesday, May 13th: Reading SOL (Grades 3-6) 
• Tuesday, May 20th: Science SOL (Grade 5 only)

In 1992, May was designated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to celebrate their heritage and contributions. Social and Emotional Learning Screener:

Parent Reports

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of March. The screener provides information on their SEL skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how much their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. Families who do not have an active ParentVUE account will receive their results via postal mail.

Protect Your Child from Measles:

What You Need to Know

Measles cases continue to rise in the U.S. About 1 in 5 people who get measles end up in the hospital. Measles can cause severe complications like a lung infection (pneumonia), brain inflammation (encephalitis), and possibly death, even with medical care. Symptoms of measles typically include:

• High fever (may spike up to 104°F)
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red, watery eyes
• A rash that appears around 3-5 days after other symptoms begin. The rash typically starts on the face and spreads down the body.

The best way to protect a child from measles is by getting two doses of the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. 

If you are unsure of your child's vaccination status or your personal vaccination status, talk to your health care provider. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your health care provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources.

✅ Share Feedback With County Health Department on School Health Services

The Fairfax County Health Department and Fairfax County Public Schools School Health Services invite parents/caregivers of FCPS students to participate in a survey on satisfaction with school health room services. The survey takes about five minutes to complete and will be open until Monday, May 5.

School health rooms (clinics) are managed by public health nurses and school health aides. Those staff provide care for students who become sick or injured during the school day, who require medications during the school day, and/or who have a chronic health condition that requires management during the school day.

Additionally, the school health room staff:

• Provide health education, communicable disease prevention, and health screenings.
• Work with schools to help address the root causes of population health disparities so that all students have equitable access to educational and health opportunities.
• Ensure that students have care for minor injuries and illnesses, and chronic health conditions, thus helping to minimize health barriers to learning. 

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of school health room services as well as inform future planning for schools.

Immunization Info: Rising 7th Graders

As required by the Code of Virginia, parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend public school. All students entering seventh grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations: 

• Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older.
• Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older.
• A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. 
• As a parent/guardian, you may decide that your child not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.

ACTION REQUIRED: Please provide one of the following immunization documents to our Student Information Assistant (SIA)/Registrar, Carolyn Licastro, as soon as possible:

1. An immunization record showing that your child has received at least one dose of each of the required immunizations listed above. Families can request immunization records free of charge through the Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS), a statewide registry system. If your child was immunized outside Virginia, you can get records from those states’ systems.
2. Submit your child’s immunization record through ParentVUE using the Online Verification/Update (OVU) Packet.
3. A note from a healthcare provider stating the date the vaccination(s) was given.
4. A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
5.  A notarized Commonwealth of Virginia, Certificate of Religious Exemption.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with their child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. If your child does not have a health care provider, please visit the FCPS Immunizations Resource page to find out where to get an immunization.

Infant Toddler Resources

Help and Resources for Infants, Toddlers, and Their Families

Are you concerned about your infant, toddler, or preschool-aged child's development? Resources are available if your child exhibits difficulties in one or more of the following areas:

• communication, 
• fine and/or gross motor skills, 
• self-help skills, 
• problem solving 
• attention skills

The Infant & Toddler Connection of Virginia (ITC) is the state’s early intervention system for infants and toddlers (0-36 months) with disabilities and their families. ITC provides evaluations and services for children who have developmental delays or medical conditions that may affect development. Parents are encouraged to contact ITC at 703-246-7121 to share their concerns.

Early Childhood Child Find is the process of identifying children with potential special education needs between the ages of 20 months and 5 years (children must be two by September 30). 

FCPS Early Childhood Identification and Services (ECID&S) offers a free referral process to identify potential developmental delays or disabilities. Special education services are provided for all children who are found eligible through the referral process. Parents are encouraged to contact 571-423-4121
