IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING SPORTS PHYSICALS
Legislation introduced in the Virginia General Assembly and recently signed into law will result in two significant changes to the athletic pre-participation examination (physical) requirements for FCPS student-athletes:
- Beginning July 1, 2025, athletic physicals will be considered valid for a period of 14 months from the date the form is signed by the medical provider completing the exam. This is the date on page 3 of the VHSL Athletic Participation/Parent Consent/Physical Examination Form (revised January 2021).
- Beginning May 1, 2025, FCPS student-athletes are EXPECTED to have athletic physicals completed on the new VHSL Athletic Participation/Parental Consent/Evaluation Form (revised April 2025).
The VHSL Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) has made the necessary changes to the current physical form, ensuring the VHSL complies with the new law. This is the form that must be used from now on.
RSCHOOL REGISTRATION CHANGE
Our current athletic registration platform (rSchools AR sites) will be moving. All of the new sites are in the process of being created. Some important information for you while we finalize this process:
- We will not be able to open registration sites on May 1st this year due to the creation of the new sites.
- We will have a new site address, families will have to create new accounts, the registrations from the current AR system will not carry over at this time.
- We will send out all of those details once everything is up and running to include instructions.
Please DO NOT register your athletes for the 25-26 season with your old RSchool accounts. We will send out new information as soon as the site is live. Hopefully in mid-May.
2025 Physicals held June 9th
To participate in sports next school year, your child must have a physical on file dated on or after May 1, 2025. This includes working out in the weight room, conditioning, “green days” and try outs. The Governor recently signed a law, and we are waiting on the VHSL’s interpretation of that law making the PPE good for 14 months from the date of the signature, and the new form found here VHSL PPE Form (04 2025)
The Oakton High School Athletic Training Program is offering an opportunity for students to receive a sports health screening and pre-participation physical (PPE) on Monday June 9 from 5:30-8 pm. Our team physicians, as well as a staff of nurses, physical therapists and certified athletic trainers will be on hand to provide a thorough screening. If during the screening or physical, the physicians find something that is questionable to them regarding your child’s health, they may request further evaluation by another physician. We are asking for a minimum donation of $50 in exchange for the PPE. Registration is now open. To register for a PPE, go to: Student Registration.
This physical is good for the next 14 months. You can make a donation for the PPE through my school bucks at the following link: https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/stores/catalog/getproduct?requestAction=ViewAll&clientKey=ZZI5ZQWBKS04NJ8&productGroupKey=ZZIOEEZJBP0RROF&view=&productKey=ZZ5QPAELMZYWA2U
This is the Athletic Training Program’s method of fund raising. All the funds for equipment and supplies are raised at this event. The county provides no funding for any of the supplies or equipment in the athletic training room that is used to take care of our athletes. Your support would be greatly appreciated. You too benefit from this process. Once your child’s VHSL physical form is completed that night, it stays on file at the school, as well as a digital copy is kept on our server, so if you need a copy just email one of the ATCs and we can send you a copy.
PPE’s are being offered in the same format at every high school in FCPS and are fund raising efforts at those schools as well. If you can not attend the PPEs at Oakton H.S., there may be another local high school offering the opportunity on a date that may be more convenient for you. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Paul Rupp, MS, ATC at prupp@fcps.edu or Danilo Salgado, LAT, ATC at dsalgado@fcps.edu.
