'We should not have to live in fear,' sister of missing Sudbury woman says: It is heartbreaking for the family and friends of Wendy Lafortune to recall that just over a year ago, she disappeared without a trace.

“No calls, no sightings, no banking transactions, no purchases … she has not been found. There is no explanation,” said Lorry Lafortune.

Lorry and a strong turn-out of family, friends and supporters marched along Lasalle Boulevard on Saturday, calling for action and in remembrance of loved ones.

Wendy’s Walk began at 3:30 p.m., covering Lasalle Boulevard from Belfry Avenue to Adanac Gardens Road – the route she would have taken on May 1, 2024 – when she was last seen. Her destination most likely was the Apollo Terrace townhome complex, where she lived with her mother.

It spans an area of Ontario bigger than Quetico Provincial Park — itself nearly as big as Algonquin Park — but few people have visited and you won’t find it easily on a map.

Tip: if you Google Winisk River Provincial Park, that will at least get you in the right neighbourhood.

As murky as it might be geographically, however, geologically and economically it has been thrust under a spotlight — particularly of late, as both Queen’s Park and Ottawa look to parry U.S. trade moves and build domestic might going forward.

Sudbury Junior Spartans take step-by-step approach to OSFL kickoff

More than 100 strong, the Sudbury Junior Spartans take to the James Jerome Sports Complex turf field.

Proudly representing the local franchise in Ontario Summer Football League action, the U16 and U18 squads boast plenty of common ground.

Blessed with coaching staffs who interact regularly, there is a clear sense of a shared vision that permeates right across the organization.

Still, inasmuch as these teams mark very different stages in the football evolution of the local talent, one can see the differentiators. Information is layered as the gridiron teens navigate the various steps of development.

A short discussion with both of the main men in charge, head coaches Alex Vendramin, for U18, and Dan Yoisten, at U16, outlines the reality of athletes who might span a gap of six years or more in age.

“The U18 systems are a little bit more complex,” noted Vendramin, the Lo-Ellen high school coach now in his third summer with the elder of the Junior Spartans crews. “There are more intricacies, the playbook is maybe a little bit bigger, but (the U16 coaching staff) prepare the guys very, very well.”
