Welcome back to Your Midday Sun where the Maple Leafs scored a victory in Game 1 that might also come with a loss.
The host Leafs hung on to edge the Florida Panthers 5-4 and take the early lead in the second-round playoff series against the defending Stanley Cup champs, but the focus late Monday and into Tuesday morning has been most squarely on the status of Anthony Stolarz. The Leafs' No. 1 netminder left the game after taking an elbow to the head from Panthers forward Sam Bennett and Stolarz' health ahead of Game 2 remains unclear.
Meanwhile, Bennett, who was not penalized on the controversial play, has also dodged a hearing with the NHL's department of player safety, Lance Hornby reports. With Stolarz forced out, Joseph Woll saw his first playoff action in the Leafs' crease and did just fine, all things considered, writes Terry Koshan in his takeaways from the game.
The Vault was rocking on Monday night and the voice of the Maple Leafs, Joe Bowen, was loving every second of it, writes columnist Joe Warmington who was taking in the sights and sounds inside Scotiabank Arena.

• Premier Doug Ford is right to point out that activist judges have "broken" our justice system, which is infiltrated with politics. Look at the bike lanes decision for the latest example of this, writes political columnist Brian Lilley.

The sex trafficking trial of Sean 'Diddy' Combs opened Monday in New York with jury selection. It's a far cry from the 1990s and early 2000s for the hip-hop mogul who was once the king of the charts and built a music and fashion empire.
After decades of dodging and weaving with the cops, Combs, 55, was pinned last September with a slew of lurid sexual abuse allegations.
If convicted, Combs could spend the rest of his life in prison. Diddy has denied any wrongdoing and has pleaded not guilty. Brad Hunter offers up a cheat sheet as the trial kicks into gear. ALSO:
• If columnist Jerry Agar had his way, he'd do things differently than our government. On tariffs, for example, he would not respond to U.S. President Donald Trump with retaliatory tariffs. Read Agar's personal throne speech here.
• The Competition Bureau is suing Canada's Wonderland for allegedly making false or misleading price claims online. The bureau claims that the GTA amusement park is advertising prices that don't include a mandatory fee of $9.99. Canada's Wonderland says the bureau's allegations are unfounded and the park will defend its "commitment to transparency and consumer value."

Prime Minister Mark Carney's meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday will be their first face-to-face get-together since Carney was first sworn in as PM on March 14. Carney says the meeting is the start of a dialogue with the Trump administration and the meeting will not solve all problems immediately. Meanwhile, Trump has not let go of the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state. |
Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett was nowhere to be found after his team's defeat in Game 1 of their second-round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Maple Leafs in Toronto. He wasn't made available to the media and he should have been, writes columnist Steve Simmons. Bennett, of course, quickly became enemy No. 1 when he collided with Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz, who a short time later left the game.
Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube called the play an "elbow to the head. Clear as day," while Panthers coach Paul Maurice downplayed the incident, saying the referee was well-positioned to call a penalty but didn't.
So the Leafs won Game 1, but whether their No. 1 goaltender returns to the crease for Game 2 remains to be seen. |
Justin Bieber took to social media with a bold prediction: His beloved Maple Leafs would win Game 1 of their second-round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Florida Panthers in Toronto. Guess what? The Biebs got it right!
