The sale of the massive Atlantic Mills complex in Providence's Olneyville neighborhood closed last week, officially ending decades of family ownership. But the future of the Manton Avenue property remains uncertain, especially for the artists and other tenants that remain in the building.
Now the Providence Preservation Society, which has already designated the complex on its annual “Most Endangered Properties” list, is shining a light on Atlantic Mills with a new website and collection of stories about it.
It’s a fascinating look at a historic part of Providence, and Marisa Angell Brown, executive director of the Providence Preservation Society, said part of the goal is to kick off a conversation about future redevelopment of the space.
You can visit the website here, and check out the reported stories, essays, photographs, primary source material, and a timeline of the Mills’ history from 1852 to the present. All stories are available in English and Spanish, Brown said.
A tenant union has been formed at Atlantic Mills, but the preservation society has long been sounding the alarm that the complex could be redeveloped into luxury apartments, which would displace a lot of the creative people who still utilize the space – not to mention the most authentic flea market in the state.
