Welcome to the Wednesday edition of the Big To-Do: Short Cuts, our midweek round-up of what’s going on around Boston, as selected by Boston Globe critics and writers.

Thursday

  • Brad Pitt’s new action flick “F1® The Movie” races into theaters this weekend.
  • The inaugural Queer [Re]Public Festival kicks off at Arrow Street Arts in Cambridge.

Friday

  • “Smoke,” the new drama about arson investigators from Dennis Lehane, debuts on Apple TV+.
  • “Law and Order: SVU” star Mariska Hargitay looks back on the life and legacy of her mother, Jayne Mansfield, in the new HBO documentary “My Mom Jayne.”
  • The 11th edition of the annual Donna Summer Roller Disco Party skates into City Hall Plaza.
  • Cambridge is getting its groove on this weekend, as well, with the return of the city’s free dance party.

Saturday

  • Emmy-winner Lee Jung-jae returns for season 3 of the hit series “Squid Game,” on Netflix.
  • Comic Carline Moore hosts the late-night “Weapons of Mass Dysfunction” show, with Andrew Mayer, Will Pottorff, and more bringing the laughs to Cambridge’s Comedy Studio.
  • Head to Medfield for the free New England Americana Festival, featuring two stages of local and regional acts at the Bellforge Arts Center.



Sunday

  • Providence’s Revolve Dance Project performs its new concert “Sound in Form,” featuring six world premiere dances, at the Strand Ballroom and Theatre.
  • Celebrate Independence Day a little early with face painting, live music, fireworks, and more at Canton’s Irish Cultural Centre.

Ongoing

  • Enjoy film, fashion, poetry, and more as the Boston Art & Music Soul (BAMS) Festival returns to the Hub through June 30.
  • The exhibition “Native Prospects: Indigeneity and Landscape” continues at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, through July 6.

Last Chance

  • The annual Roxbury International Film Festival concludes its latest edition on Friday.
  • Catch the Gloucester Stage Company’s production of the Tennessee Williams classic “The Glass Menagerie” through Saturday.
