Cash in on your old fashion

Here’s the thing about fast fashion: Most of the time, it doesn’t last. That shirt you got from SHEIN, those shoes from Old Navy, the jeans from H&M — they may last a season or two, but it’s likelier they’ll end up in a landfill.

Textile waste has increased over the past 20 years thanks to fast fashion and other factors, according to a U.S. Government Accountability Office study. In 2018, the Environmental Protection Agency found that 66% of discarded textiles end up in landfills. It’s a serious problem because textile waste creates pollution and has harmful effects to the environment and to humans. And currently, textile recycling is in its infancy, though there are efforts to increase it.

In the meantime, there are plenty of ways to get around buying fast fashion while still saving money. Hit the thrift stores, host a community clothing swap or take advantage of quality brands’ clothing trade-in programs. We’ve rounded up eight places you can send your worn clothes for credit or cash.
