On the streets of Parc-Ex, moving vans were sparser Tuesday than is typical for a Montreal moving day, which is just what community organization Comité d’action de Parc-Extension expected.
With rents surging across the city, “many people are hanging on for dear life to the apartments they have.” For those who couldn't, the City of Montreal is working to find temporary lodging for 200 households. They’ve already relocated 68, all but three into hotels.
Then there are the families and groups who are sharing small apartments, says tenant support mobilizer Amina Saman. When describing their situation, she tells The Gazette’s Jack Wilson, “sometimes they cry.”
