“Hey, Kat!” I said cheerfully as I answered my phone. It was around 2:00 P.M. on a weekday in September. My sister’s voice sounded pained, almost inaudible as she whispered, “I am in the emergency room with a terrible pain in my side.” I could tell she was holding back tears as she said, “They ran some tests, and they think I have cancer.” Paralyzed by her words, all I managed to say was, “Katherine, I am on the way.”

Engulfed in fear, I drove to the hospital to be with my sister. On the drive to the hospital, I kept thinking, You didn’t come this far just to get this far. After a marriage that didn’t work and with many trials to follow, Katherine had flourished and made a beautiful life for herself. (Keep reading)
