That sign – spotted at a protest this spring – perfectly captures the overwhelming assault now facing our democracy. But at Americans United, we do know where to begin: by defending our public schools, our rights, and the separation of religion and government that protects them both.
Today, Christian Nationalists are using the return of the Trump administration and the 900-page Project 2025 blueprint to erase our values – and replace them with a narrow set of religious beliefs imposed upon everyone. Their plan is as clear as it is extreme: dismantle the Department of Education, defund public schools, force religious doctrine into every classroom, and channel taxpayer funds to private schools through so-called “school choice” voucher schemes.
As classrooms across the country prepare to reopen for a new school year, the threats are only increasing – and AU is ready. We not only track and report religious freedom violations, but we respond directly, taking legal steps and working with schools and families to resolve them. That includes distributing our Know Your Rights guides so families know exactly when to report issues to us.
