Patient-Reported Indicator Surveys (OECD-PaRIS)/Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) Limited Data Set (LDS)

July 7, 2025:  CMS announced availability of the OECD-PaRIS/MCBS Limited Data Set. Documentation related to this LDS file is now also available on the MCBS website.

The OECD-PaRIS/MCBS file contains data on patient-reported health care outcomes, fruit and vegetable consumption, and frequency of exercise from the OECD-PaRIS Survey and is linkable to other MCBS LDS data products. Accompanying this file are Fruit and Vegetable Consumption Among Medicare Beneficiaries Infographic and OECD-PaRIS/MCBS Patient Reported Outcomes of Medicare Beneficiaries PUF.

2023 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) Survey File Limited Data Set (LDS)

July 7, 2025:  CMS announced availability of the 2023 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) Survey File Limited Data Set. Documentation related to this LDS file is now also available on the MCBS website.

The MCBS Survey File contains over 6 thousand variables on a broad range of topics, including social determinants of health, economic outcomes, medication non-adherence, health insurance coverage and barriers to accessing care. The file includes data collected during the Fall, Winter, and Summer Rounds and contains information on beneficiaries living in the community and beneficiaries living in facility settings. The file is augmented with 5 years of enrollment data and, for beneficiaries enrolled in FFS Medicare, with 5 years of limited FFS claims.

2024 MCBS Annotated Bibliography

April 18, 2025: CMS released the MCBS 2024 Annotated Bibliography. This bibliography can be found on the MCBS website: MCBS 2024 Annotated Bibliography. Annually the MCBS posts a listing of peer reviewed journal articles and government publications which utilize the MCBS data in their analysis. Starting with calendar year 2020, the bibliographies include annotations for each source, which describe the research question, analysis, and findings.

Requests for the MCBS LDS files must be made through the CMS DUA tracking system known as the Enterprise Privacy Policy Engine (EPPE).  Information on ordering MCBS files from CMS, including instructions for accessing and using EPPE to make a request, can be obtained through the CMS LDS website: Limited Data Set (LDS) Files.  MCBS Public Use Files (PUFs) are available to the public as free downloads and can be found through the CMS PUF website at MCBS Public Use Files (PUFs).
