Good afternoon. It’s Thursday, July 17.

In today's newsletter:

  • Sen. Dan Sullivan joined most of his GOP colleagues in approving a request from the Trump administration to rescind billions of dollars in previously approved funding, including tens of millions of dollars for Alaska’s public radio stations.

  • The Anchorage School District has begun laying off employees after the Trump administration froze $14 million in education funding meant for the district, according to a letter from its superintendent.

  • The mother of a man who died while being restrained by correctional officers in his cell had posted bail to get her son out of the Anchorage Correctional Complex just 10 hours earlier.

Travelers giddy about being able to keep their shoes on while walking through TSA checkpoints at the airport may have something else to look forward to: changes to how much liquid they can carry. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem hinted this week at possible changes to the amount of liquids travelers can tote in their carry-on baggage.

Anchorage weather

It's mostly cloudy with a high of 67 degrees and a chance of isolated rain showers, though it should gradually become mostly sunny later today. The forecast calls for a chance of rain on Friday and mostly cloudy skies over the weekend.
