Prime Minister Keir Starmer has warned the five-day strike over pay by resident doctors would cause "huge loss for the NHS and the country". Writing in The Times, he also criticised the British Medical Association (BMA) for "rushing" into strikes. The BMA said the government had had every opportunity to stop the walkout. Health Secretary Wes Streeting has promised to keep NHS services running - including non-urgent services. He said the impact would be kept to a minimum after NHS England ordered hospitals to only cancel treatments in exceptional circumstances. Senior doctors are covering for resident doctors, the new term for junior doctors, who are striking for the 12th time in the pay dispute.

France will recognise Palestinian state, Macron says
Macron has said France will officially recognise a Palestinian state in September - the first G7 nation to do so. In a post on X, Macron said the formal announcement would be made at a session of the UN General Assembly in New York, saying there was an “urgent need” for the war to end. The move has been criticised by Israel and the US, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio calling the decision "reckless".

Trump takes time out to open Scottish golf course
Donald Trump will fly into Scotland later today to visit two golf resorts which he owns in the country. He will travel to Turnberry in South Ayrshire, a world class venue he bought in 2014, and to Menie in Aberdeenshire - to open a new 18-hole course. The White House says he will also meet Starmer to discuss trade while he is in the UK. Read why the trip is so exceptional.
