Get Your Folk Music On During Live! At the Library in August

Events Feature Summer Movies on the Lawn and Folk Music Concerts

Experience the magic of folk music brought to life during Live! At the Library in August. On Aug. 14, The Henhouse Prowlers will bring high-energy Bluegrass to the Coolidge Auditorium. Enjoy happy hour drinks and snacks at the Library of Congress before toe-tapping to folk music to end the summer season. On Aug. 21, The Creek Rocks duo will perform a special concert full of folk and old-time music from the Ozarks. This concert will feature repertoire from the Library’s American Folklife Center archive.

The Library’s Summer Movies on the Lawn series comes to a sunset with the showing of the film “Iron Man” on Aug. 7. Guests are encouraged to bring their own drinks and snacks while enjoying classic films on the Southeast lawn of the Thomas Jefferson Building.

Is That a Giant Fish? The “Roadside America” of John Margolies

The photographer John Margolies chronicled the weird and wonderful ways American businesses advertised themselves along the nation's roadways in the latter half of the 20th century. He felt dinosaur-shaped gas stations and a giant gunslinging shrimp advertising a restaurant weren't just roadside kitsch but a genuine expression of the national identity. The Library preserves more than 11,000 of his images.
