Our month-long challenge is off to a great start! Volunteers completed 342 pages and saved 731 transcriptions in the first week of transcribing Clara Barton's Red Cross File. We're focusing our attention on this file in August to celebrate many women who supported the Red Cross's work in its earliest days.
Two fascinating folders that the highlight the wide range of women who aided the Red Cross contain nursing enlistment correspondence from the Spanish-American War. Women from around the country offered their services to the Red Cross by writing to Barton about their qualifications, whether from formal nursing education or experience. Volunteers have transcribed all of the letters in these folders but the transcriptions still need review before they can be marked complete! Jump in to help close out these pages from 1897-1898 and 1898-1899.
On Women's Equality Day (August 26), we're hosting a special virtual Transcribing Hour from 3-4pm EDT where you can join us to transcribe the Red Cross File together. Drop in for a few minutes or the full hour - all are welcome! Register to receive a link for the event.
Transcriptions from two campaigns recently returned to loc.gov
The By the People team has recently returned the completed transcriptions from two campaigns to the Library's main website where they can help researchers find and access these materials. You can now explore transcriptions from the African American Perspectives and Joseph Holt campaigns alongside scans of the original images on loc.gov. Explore these transcriptions to see what you can find!
Happy August!
