Protecting America’s Heroes at Home
A Message from DAS Jessie Jane Duff
When I came on board at the Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS), I knew we had a few top priorities. One of the most critical is protecting our service members—especially those in the Guard and Reserve—by making sure their civilian careers are secure while they defend our nation.
Under President Trump’s leadership, we’ve returned to putting America First, and that means putting our service members and veterans first. In just a few short months, this administration has made bold moves to strengthen the protections our heroes have earned and deserve.
Here’s what we’ve launched so far:
To make protections under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) clearer and easier to navigate, we’ve introduced opinion letters—official, written responses from VETS that explain how USERRA applies to real-world situations. Whether you're an employer, a service member, or an advocate, you can now get tailored guidance directly from our team.

SALUTE—Support and Assistance for Leaders in USERRA Training and Employment—is our newest initiative to help employers proactively comply with the law. We’re offering direct, practical help to HR professionals, legal advisors, and leadership teams so they can meet their USERRA obligations confidently.
This isn’t just about avoiding lawsuits—it’s about doing right by the men and women who serve. We’re here to help employers get it right from the start.

Standing with Those Who Serve
America is at its best when we honor those who defend her. I want to thank the employers who continue to back our service members, not just with words—but with action. Your commitment strengthens our workforce, our military readiness, and our country.
