My Honest Thoughts On Hoka’s Most Cushioned Design
I’ve logged hundreds of miles in my 15 years as a runner, completing one full marathon and seven half marathons along the way. Hoka makes some of my favorite designs (I ran the NYC Marathon in the first generation Kawanas), so I was excited to get my hands on a pair of the Hoka Bondi 9s when they first launched back in January. Over the past seven months, I’ve put them to the test for everything from incline walks on the treadmill to speed workouts on pavement. The verdict? They’re extremely comfortable—but not very versatile.

Hoka Arahi 8
If your foot collapses inward as you step, or if you suffer from flat feet, this shoe is designed to provide additional stability. It features firm strips of foam along the sides of the shoe that prevent rolling, but it doesn’t overcorrect your gait. Instead, think of it as a gentle helping hand that keeps your foot upright and the surrounding muscles engaged.

Hoka Rocket X 3
The Rocket X 3 is Hoka’s latest take on the now ubiquitous carbon-plated racing shoe, and it’s as fast and aggressive as they come. At just 8 ounces per shoe, it’s one of the lighter options in Hoka’s lineup, employing feathery and responsive PEBA foam that propels you forward. If you’re after one of Hoka’s most explosive options for race day, this is it.
