Good afternoon. It’s Tuesday, August 19.

In today's newsletter:

  • One of the stranger stories to come out of the Trump-Putin summit was that of an Alaska man who was given a new motorcycle by Russian officials, who explained it was a “personal gift” from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

  • A glacial outburst flood that swept through Juneau’s Mendenhall Valley last week damaged nearly 50 homes, according to preliminary surveys, far less than during past flooding events in recent years.

  • Five Alaska lawmakers gathered in the Capitol in Juneau for pro forma floor sessions to indicate the majorities’ lack of interest in considering Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s education policy proposals.

Alaska is one of the most dangerous states for women, and, based on anecdotal evidence, that trend has been true for more than a century. In his most recent column, historian David Reamer explores the 1923 murder of two Juneau sex workers and the state of public safety for women in Alaska.

Anchorage weather

It's rainy and overcast today with a high near 62 degrees. The forecast calls for a chance of rain again on Wednesday, but we could see partly sunny skies on Thursday and heading into the weekend. Daytime highs will hover in the mid- to high 60s for the rest of the week.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
