Wominjeka! ABC science reporter Jacinta Bowler back in the newsletter hot seat.
First up — thanks everyone for sending in stories (or even handwritten votes) for your favourite underrated animal. The response we got to this little poll was wonderful, and we hoped you enjoyed watching and listening over the past few weeks.
While the rakali came out on top, in my opinion the real winners were all of us who now know a little more about 10 amazing, underrated Australian animals. 😉
National Science Week might be over for another year, but here at ABC Science we obviously keep the science news rolling all year round.
So this week, we're crashing straight back to Earth and releasing a huge plume of microplastics.
We know that microplastics are everywhere — including in our food, water and air — but are there ways we can minimise our exposure?
Belinda Smith has dived into the plastic muck to find out, and discovered that there are plenty of things we can do, including better looking after our carpets.
Check out the audio version for Lab Notes if you're on the go.
I also wanted to highlight an incredible discovery of a 100-million-year-old pearl found in outback Queensland. The marble-sized hunk is the largest of its age found in Australia. How cool!
Over in audio land, if you missed the hour-long broadcast where we counted down the winner of the underrated animal poll, What the Duck?! released the whole thing as a podcast, and it's worth a listen (see if you can catch my quick appearance).
Plus, the Science Show's 50th anniversary is extremely soon, and this week, Robyn Williams investigates a new version of CRISPR that could change our epigenetic markers.
That's it from me this week. If you have feedback, fun science photos or something else you want to tell us about, send us an email. We love to hear from you.
