For the European leaders—including Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president—gathered in the White House on Monday, a bright spot of the meeting was Donald Trump’s apparent willingness to support European “security guarantees” for Ukraine as part of a peace settlement with Russia. But, having lavished praise on Mr Trump, they now have to flesh out proposals that are at best hopelessly vague, and at worst desperately over-optimistic.
Although Mr Trump hopes to add this conflict to the list of six wars he claims to have ended in six months, Americans don’t seem impressed with his diplomatic prowess. We have new polling data on how they rate his handling of foreign policy, and his presidency more generally.
