Poll: Parents show increased support for school choice
Parents are showing increasing support for school choice, with nearly 60% favoring the use of public funds for private or religious schools, according to a PDK International poll. While support for public schools has declined, most Americans oppose closing the Department of Education, and 65% believe that closing the department would hurt public education.
Schools emphasize bilingual education for global citizenship
Schools in Honolulu are emphasizing bilingual and multilingual education to foster global citizenship and cultural understanding. Maryknoll School's Mandarin immersion program, which began nine years ago, has students spending half their day learning subjects in Mandarin, while St. Louis School offers a multilingual approach, requiring students to study at least two world languages, including Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Samoan, Spanish and Hawaiian.
Jewish educators focus on God-centered learning
The Jewish Education Innovation Challenge is working to bring God-centered learning into Jewish day schools, aiming to help students develop a personal relationship with God. Educators are encouraged to create open-ended lesson plans that invite students to explore their own concepts of God, ask questions and build personal spiritual routines.
