Welcome to the Wednesday edition of the Big To-Do: Short Cuts, our midweek round-up of what’s going on around Boston, as selected by Boston Globe critics and writers.

Thursday

  • Catch a free screening of the 2009 romcom “(500) Days of Summer,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, at Trident Booksellers & Cafe.

Friday

  • “Long Story Short,” the new animated comedy from the creator of “Bojack Horseman,” arrives on Netflix.

  • The Chevalier Theatre in Medford hosts a Gen X-themed comedy night, featuring performances by The Real Slim Sherri, Jon Wellington, Nick Harrison, and Kelly Manno.

  • Celebrate 50 years of “Barry Lyndon” with special screenings of the classic Stanley Kubrick film at the Brattle in Cambridge Friday through Sunday.

Saturday

  • Lexington native Pete Holmes brings the laughs to Boston with a pair of shows at the Wilbur.

  • Headlined by Maine singer-songwriter Lady Lamb, the free We Make Noise Fest takes over Downtown Crossing to spotlight women and nonbinary artists.

  • Catch a rock block from icons Billy Idol and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, who take the stage at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield.

  • Featuring music, dance, food, and a flag-raising ceremony, the Ukrainian Cultural Center of New England’s Independence Day celebration comes to City Hall.

  • Hummingbird Books in Chestnut Hill hosts its first Children’s Local Author Fair.

  • The Bay State Hot Jazz Festival returns for two days of free performances at the Condon Band Shell in Medford, Saturday and Sunday.




Sunday

  • Social media sensation and singer-songwriter Wisp comes to Royale as part of her “If Not Winter” tour.
  • Americana folk crooner Josh Ritter heads back to the Boston area with his Royal City Band for a show at Lowell’s Boarding House Park.

Ongoing

  • The Cape Ann Museum’s “Down to the Sea” photography exhibit continues in Gloucester through Sept. 28.

  • The exhibition “Paul G. Ryan’s 1960s” runs at the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum through Oct. 31.

Last Chance

  • Presented by Broadway in Boston, “The Wiz” concludes its run at Citizens Opera House on Sunday.
