Kings Park Families,

September is Attendance Awareness Month! This is the perfect time to build strong routines and learn how attendance impacts academic success. Did you know that missing just 10% of the school year - about 2 days per month - can make it harder for students to learn to read and feel connected at school?

Kings Park's current chronic absenteeism rate is 7.9%. This is a 1% decrease from this time last school year. If we end the month at 8% chronic absenteeism or less, we will have an in-house, schoolwide dance party! Thanks for your partnership in meeting this goal.

We recognize that challenges such as illness or personal circumstances can sometimes make consistent attendance difficult. Our school team is committed to partnering with students and families to overcome barriers together. Every day counts, and every student belongs here!

Attendance

Every Day Counts: Setting Your Child Up for Success

September is Attendance Awareness Month. There are many ways parents and caregivers can help their children create healthy routines and make a habit of getting to school on time every day. Some examples include:

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

Visit the FCPS website for more attendance tips and resources. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

Body Safety Program

The Body Safety Program is scheduled to take place at KPES the week of September 22-26 for grades K-3. If you would like to opt your child out of this program, please make sure to send in a signed opt-out form (English/Spanish) no later than Wednesday, September 10th. Please note that Rylynn, a Department of Family Services Facility Dog, will be on-site Friday. We will have a virtual family info session via Zoom on Thursday, September 18th from 6:00pm-7:00pm. A link will be provided in next week’s News You Choose.

The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 1: Strong Start, Pre-K-12

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

Each goal has an equity commitment — the promise we make to every student to support them in attaining these goals. Each goal also has several measures that allow us to track our progress.

The first goal in the strategic plan focuses on each and every student having a strong start in FCPS. Whether they’re joining us in preschool or in high school, we want our students to be set up for success.See how Goal 1 is being put into practice.
