The thinnest iPhone yet — and more from today’s Apple event

Apple

Apple just wrapped its annual fall product-launch event, and our tech experts were on the ground in Cupertino, California to cover all the news. We’ll reserve judgment about these much-hyped releases until after we officially test them, but until then, our main takeaways:

Apple unveiled the new iPhone Air, which they call the thinnest iPhone yet. The super-slim titanium device is also supposedly their most durable, thanks to a special coating on the front and back. (Our hunch, though? All that thinness may come at the cost of an actually good battery life, despite what Apple claims. We’re looking forward to putting this phone through its paces.)

As for the rest of the new iPhone lineup, perhaps most notable is the iPhone 17 Pro, which has received a major redesign: a brand-new and more durable aluminum body, a more powerful processing chip under the hood, upgraded cameras, and a striking new Cosmic Orange color option.

Beyond the iPhones, several more products were announced today, including a new Apple Watch that can detect high blood pressure and the next generation of AirPods Pro, which offer real-time translation: Listen to someone speak in another language, and the AirPods will play back translated audio.

One last (apple) thing: This very pretty deep-dish pie plate

A pie baked in the Emile Henry 9-Inch Pie Dish.
Sarah Kobos for NYT Wirecutter

To achieve a truly stunning pie (apple, perhaps?), disposable aluminum pie plates just won’t cut it. A great pie plate can help your dessert look and taste great, and prevent slumping crusts and soggy bottoms. This quite pretty, currently on-sale one is deep, sturdy, and bakes more evenly than other ceramic dishes we tested. It holds up under a broiler, and comes in several elegant colors. Perfect for gifting to your favorite baker — in the hopes you’ll be added to their treat-recipient rotation.
