Good morning, Chicago. The enrollment boost Chicago Public Schools got for the past two years appears to be over. Early estimates indicate that there are about 12,000 fewer students enrolled this year, a 4% decline. The Tribune Editorial Board does not expect the official numbers, yet to be released by CPS, to be much rosier and offers some suggestions in its first piece today for how to move forward. Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is back in our section giving us another reason why Donald Trump does not need to send the National Guard to Chicago to help fight crime: Carjackings and other cases of automobile theft are down. New polling shows that men and women of the Gen Z generation have different goals as well as political beliefs. Young men are becoming more conservative, and women are identifying as progressive. The board urges us all not to worry too much as history has shown us that divided generations can come together over time. The kids are alright, the board says in its second piece. We also have a piece from the president of Lake Forest College that urges fellow university leaders to not give up on the humanities. Plus, there’s an extra large helping of letters to the editor for you. Fall is on its way, and to celebrate one of Chicago’s more underrated seasons, we invite you to share what you love about fall or the memories that come to mind when autumn arrives. Submit a letter of no more than 400 words at the link below. Be sure to include your full name, your city/town and your phone number. We hope you enjoy your Wednesday. — Grace Miserocchi, opinion editor Submit an op-ed | Submit a letter to the editor | Meet the Tribune Editorial Board | Subscribe to this newsletter |
