Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is highlighting several data products the agency released during the month of August:
Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) – Annual Updates The Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) is CMS's flagship survey of Medicare beneficiaries, conducted continuously since 1991. MCBS captures the full spectrum of beneficiary experiences across all Medicare populations including those in traditional Medicare, Medicare Advantage, community settings, and long-term care facilities. MCBS uniquely combines survey data with Medicare enrollment and claims information, enabling analyses that would not be possible with administrative data alone.
- The 2023 Socio-demographic and Health Characteristics of Medicare Beneficiaries by Dual Enrollment Status PUF provides an overview of socio-demographic characteristics, chronic conditions, functional limitations, and mental health indicators across the Medicare population, with breakdowns by dual enrollment status and age.
- The 2023 Financial Well-being of Medicare Beneficiaries PUF provides an overview of income, asset ownership, median asset values, food insecurity, and access to transportation among Medicare beneficiaries, overall and by demographic and health characteristics.
- The 2024 Internet Access and Use Among Medicare Beneficiaries Preliminary Estimates PUF provides an overview of access to the internet, frequency of internet use, and type of internet use among Medicare beneficiaries, overall and by demographic and health characteristics.
- The 2024 Medicare Beneficiaries’ Knowledge of Their Right to File a Complaint or an Appeal Preliminary Estimates PUF provides an overview of Medicare beneficiaries’ knowledge of their right to file a complaint or an appeal with Medicare, overall and by demographic and health characteristics.
The MCBS Survey File – Early Release Limited Data Set (LDS) includes select microdata from the 2024 MCBS Survey File LDS on an expedited schedule. This product includes information on demographics, health and chronic conditions, preventive health behaviors, and other topics for Medicare enrollees living in the community only, based on data collected in Fall 2024. Documentation related to this LDS file is now also available. For information about ordering, see the CMS LDS ordering page.
The 2024 Socio-demographic and Health Characteristics of Medicare Beneficiaries Early Release PUF provides an overview of socio-demographic characteristics, chronic conditions, and functional limitations of Medicare beneficiaries. This PUF is based on data from the 2024 MCBS Survey File – Early Release Limited Data Set.
Medicare Post-Acute Care and Hospice Provider Public Use Files – Annual Update The Medicare Post-Acute Care and Hospice Provider Public Use Files (PAC PUF) provide information on services provided to Medicare beneficiaries by home health agencies (HHAs), hospices, skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs), and long-term care hospitals (LTCHs). The datasets contain information on demographic and clinical characteristics of beneficiaries served, professional and paraprofessional service utilization, submitted charges, and payments at the provider, state, and national levels. Additionally, the PAC PUF includes payment information at the case-mix grouping level for HHAs, SNFs, and IRFs. For HHA, the 2023 calendar year data are now available. For hospices, IRFs, LTCHs, and SNFs, the 2023 fiscal year data are now available.
Users, please note that we’ve redesigned the PAC PUF to comply with the 2018 Evidence Act. All PAC PUF datasets are now available via the main landing page, Medicare Post-Acute Care Utilization.
Medicare Enrollment – Monthly Update The Medicare Monthly Enrollment file and Medicare Enrollment Dashboard present counts of Medicare beneficiaries with hospital/medical coverage and prescription drug coverage by geographic area and now include enrollee counts for May 2025.
