Fairfax Boulevard Intersection Improvements
Construction on key improvements began in August.
What to Expect
- Intersection Improvements: The six-legged intersection at Fairfax Boulevard, Warwick Avenue, and McLean Avenue will be reconfigured into a standard four-legged intersection.
- New Traffic Signals: A new traffic signal will be installed at the Fairfax Boulevard and Farr Avenue intersection, and the existing signal at the Fairfax Boulevard, Warwick Avenue, and McLean Avenue intersection will be reconstructed.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: New curbs, sidewalks, and crosswalks will be installed. The project also includes new pavement surfaces, updated markings, and modified drainage systems. All new ramps will be compliant with ADA standards.
- Traffic and Access: To keep everyone moving, there will be no full road closures. However, you can expect periodic lane closures, so please plan for potential delays. Access to all local businesses and residences will be maintained throughout the project.

Government Center Parkway Extension
The city is constructing the missing link of Government Center Parkway from Stevenson Street in Fairfax County to Jermantown Road in the city. Construction is underway.

Jermantown Road Multimodal Improvements
This project will reduce congestion and improve multimodal mobility on Jermantown Road between the I-66 overpass and Route 50. Construction is anticipated to start in 2026.
Staff will provide an update to the city council during a work session on Oct. 7 (date subject to change).

Sept. 22 is Car Free Day in Fairfax City
 At the Sept. 9 meeting of the Fairfax City Council, Mayor Catherine Read proclaimed Sept. 22 “Car Free Day” in Fairfax City and presented the proclamation to Chloe Ritter, the city’s multimodal transportation planner. Car Free Day encourages motorists around the world to see what life would be like without cars on the road (cleaner, quieter, healthier, safer, less expensive, more connected).
As a member of Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' Transportation Planning Board, Fairfax City supports the development and use of safe, convenient, and energy-efficient transportation options.
CUE Transit Development Plan Discussion, Oct. 7
The CUE Transit Development Plan was last updated in 2016, and the city is now updating the plan to guide how CUE operations for the next 10 years.

Move Fairfax City Open House, Oct. 8
An open house will be held 6-8 p.m. Oct. 8 at the City of Fairfax Regional Library.
The city is developing a safety action plan, pedestrian plan, and an Old Town Fairfax multimodal circulation study. The three plans make up Move Fairfax City. A steering committee was established on May 13 to guide the project.

Try Getting There Differently in September
 Car Free Day is observed on Sept. 22, but Fairfax City encourages you to try an alternative to driving alone in your car at least once in September. Convenient options for getting there differently include our fare-free CUE Bus, Metrorail, Capital Bikeshare, e-scooter, carpooling, or even walking. Sometimes getting there differently allows you to experience the city differently. Accept the challenge and have fun!

Safe Scooting Tips
 Please follow these e-scooter safety tips.
- Stop at stop signs and follow traffic laws.
- Ride safely. Don't assume drivers can see you. Wear bright colors.
- Slow down and yield to pedestrians.
- Use the bell when passing pedestrians.
- Don't wear earbuds when riding e-scooters.
- Wear a helmet.
- Lime and Bird e-scooter users must be at least 18 years old to ride.
- Children younger than 14 are required to wear a helmet when riding personal e-scooters.
- Be mindful of where you park. Don't block driveways, walkways, and building entrances.

If you bike or ride a scooter to the Fairfax City Fall Festival on Oct. 11, try the free bike valet service at University Drive and Armstrong Street.
