From Cocinas to Lucha Libre Ringsides: A Latinx Comics Anthology, edited by Latinx scholar Frederick Luis Aldama and children’s book author Angela Sánchez, is a big-hearted anthology of Latinx comics celebrating food, sports, and the persistent influence of both in Latinx culture and identity. The stories offer complex memories of family and home cooking as well as the rambunctious spectacle of lucha libre wrestling. In this 12-page excerpt from the story “Elotera,” the creator tells the tale of his Mexican-American father’s 1950s childhood and the shame of being ridiculed in school for his poor English and for the food he brought from home.
