Good morning everyone, it’s Ben here in a soggy Melbourne, here is what’s making headlines today.

Today’s must-reads:
• ANZ’s global markets chief departs in overhaul
• Here’s how much you need to retire comfortably
• US political activist Charlie Kirk shot dead, Trump says

What's happening now

Troubled Australian lender ANZ’s global markets chief Anshul Sidher is leaving the bank after more than a decade, the latest senior departure during Chief Executive Officer Nuno Matos’s overhaul. Sidher stepped down on Wednesday to pursue other opportunities, the Melbourne-based bank said in a statement.

More bank job cuts in the banking sector, with NAB cutting 410 jobs within its technology and enterprise operations division, according to the Finance Sector Union.

Australians will need as much as A$690,000 ($455,000) of pension savings to retire comfortably, according to a new report that highlights how rising living costs are stretching household budgets even under the country’s globally admired pensions system.

In other superannuation news, Australian pension funds boosted currency hedges on overseas equities last quarter, signaling many were closely watching for a potential shift in how the dollar performs in risk-off markets, according to Westpac Banking Corp.

Iluka Resources shares fell the most since March 2020 after the miner said it would suspend mineral sands production and kiln operations at a project in Western Australia because of poor demand.

The government will invest A$1.7 billion to develop and manufacture a submarine drone that can both surveil the oceans and conduct strikes — as part of efforts to expand the nation’s military capabilities.

What happened overnight

Here’s what my colleague, market strategist Mike “Willo” Wilson says happened while we were sleeping…

US blue chips fell but the S&P 500 Index closed higher, alongside Treasury bonds (lower yields) after an index of producer prices edged lower in August from a month earlier, soothing worries about elevated inflation and cementing bets for Fed interest rate cuts starting next week. Aussie and kiwi gained as the dollar eased. It’s not over for the latter as the US CPI looms large later today. Australia has consumer inflation expectations while ASX futures point to a soft opening.

Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, executive director of the Turning Point USA advocacy group, has died, President Donald Trump said on social media. Kirk was shot while speaking at an outdoor event Wednesday at Utah Valley University.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to talk and resume trade negotiations with President Trump, signaling a possible thaw after weeks of a blistering fight over tariffs and Russian oil purchases.

In other tariff news, Mexico is looking to apply tariffs of as much as 50% on cars and auto parts, as well as steel and textiles from China and other countries with which it does not have a trade agreement, according to Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

There are at least five lessons that Europe and the US should take away from Russia’s unprecedented decision to fire drones into Poland as part of another massive volley against Ukraine, writes Bloomberg Opinion’s Marc Champion.

Do you have a favorite airline loyalty program? Unfortunately Australia’s Qantas failed to crack the top 10 in Point.me’s 2025 global airline rewards rankings with Flying Blue, the joint loyalty program of Air France and KLM, soaring to the top for the second year in a row, followed by American Airlines’ AAdvantage program and Alaska Air’s Mileage Plan.
