Dear friends,

Almost 36 years ago (Nov 25 & 26, 1989), Marianne Faithfull crashed into St. Ann’s Church with a spellbinding concert called Blazing Away (watch: https://mailer.stannswarehouse.org/c/AQiarxEQhPNJGNvqvqABIKvJzxRwDagQO7aIc4yZRUd5eyBHejiOz8Z_7_DHliYbTcf8Lw The band included Garth Hudson, Dr. John, Barry Reynolds, and Marc Ribot; and Jesus Ascending, a 16’ stained glass window, was the backdrop for Marianne’s redemption.

At the time, we were almost ten years old, and the organization and our lives were about to change forever. Just the year before, we had produced John Cale and Lou Reed’s Songs for ‘Drella, a tribute to their friend and mentor Andy Warhol. And then we were embarking on Marianne’s comeback concert with the magical music producer Hal Willner. The roads where theater meets rock 'n roll would cross at St. Ann’s Church.

Fast forward to 2021. We’re in DUMBO now, and we are emerging from the pandemic with Justin Vivian Bond and Anthony Roth Costanzo in Only an Octave Apart, another rock 'em, sock 'em cri de coeur. And I’m thinking, “Wow, Viv can sing in Marianne’s distinctive range and could bring her own panache and passion to Marianne’s incredible songs and repertoire, including Blazing Away.” And Viv is thinking about her long held dream to do just that at St. Ann’s Church. So we make a deal and a promise, and the result is Flaming September in homage to Marianne, Hal, and our 21-year history at the church.

We’re going home for 5 nights next week, September 24–28. It’s going to be gorgeous. Come with us.

Most sincerely,
Susan Feldman, Founder and Artistic Director
