Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito was “trash,” he said, in 4⅓ innings on Wednesday against the Athletics. He allowed four runs, five hits, and five walks in the Sox’ 5-4, 10-inning victory.
On an individual level, the biggest development of his outing was reaching 140 innings on the year, which grants him the power to become a free agent again this offseason.
That was the contractually stipulated threshold that turned his $14 million team option for 2026 into a $19 million mutual option. Realistically, barring injury, Giolito is a virtual lock to decline his end in favor of a $1.5 million buyout and taking another crack at the open market — after a much stronger showing than last time.
