Virginia Standing Order for Pharmacies to Provide 2025-2026 COVID-19 Vaccine
On September 10, Virginia State Health Commissioner Karen Shelton, MD, signed a new statewide standing order for pharmacies in Virginia to facilitate accessibility for pharmacists to administer the 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccine.
The standing order allows pharmacists to administer the vaccine to Virginians 65 years of age and older and those between the ages of 18 and 64 with at least one underlying medical condition without a prescription. Read the full statement from the Virginia Department of Health.
ACIP Recommendations Regarding Use of 2025-2026 COVID-19 Vaccine
On September 19, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) made recommendations regarding the use of the 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccination. ACIP recommendations go to the Director of the CDC who may accept or modify those recommendations before they become official policy. Once those recommendations are finalized, local health departments and providers can begin ordering and administering vaccine. When more information is available, it will be posted on the Heatlh Department's COVID-19 webpage.
Vaccine Availability at Fairfax County Health Department Clinics
Once available, Health Department clinics anticipate a limited vaccine supply and will only provide COVID-19 vaccine to individuals who are uninsured or covered by Medicaid.

New Public Health Center Opens October 7 in Franconia Area
On September 26, the Fairfax County Health Department held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new public health center. The Franconia-Springfield Public Health Center provides a wide array of public health services, including immunizations, maternity services, HIV and STI testing, assistance with navigating county resources, vital records, as well as the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) nutrition program.

Reminder: Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Share Student Immunization Deadline
Starting Tuesday, November 18, FCPS students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school. Visit the How to Submit Immunization Documents webpage for step-by-step guidance on checking your child's immunization status and submitting updated immunization information.
Parents and caregivers are asked to check with their students' health care provider to make sure their child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2025-26 school year. If your child/children are in need of required immunization(s), make an appointment with a health care provider. FCPS provides additional immunization resources.

Fairfax Food Council Seeks Youth Representative
Are you interested in food access and advocacy in your community? The Fairfax Food Council is looking for a Youth Representative to serve on its Advisory Council. This volunteer role is open to high schoolers and college undergrads who live or go to school in Fairfax County, the City of Fairfax, or the City of Falls Church.

National Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, October 25, 2025
Take advantage of the free, convenient, confidential and safe disposal of unused or expired medications on National Drug Take Back Day. Prescription medications can be dropped off at nine Fairfax County Police Department sites around the county between 10:00am and 2:00pm.
Help spread the word by putting up posters and flyers, sharing on social media and volunteering for the event.
