Good morning, it's Thursday. I'm Thomas Morgan with your AM NewsMail. As an international aid flotilla is intercepted by Israel's navy, on the ground in Gaza, Palestinians are being told it's their last chance to leave the enclave's largest city ahead of a deepening offensive against Hamas.
Before we get to that, we have an in-depth look at why Australia's weather is bearing the brunt as our oceans warm. And tributes are flowing as renowned conservationist Jane Goodall dies at the age of 91.

Here's what you need to know today
|
What's the story? Over the past year, Australia's oceans have been hotter than ever before. That set the stage for some significant events across our continent, from an extraordinary cyclone season in the north to an ecologically disastrous algal bloom off our southern shores.
Red alert in the engine climate room: In this deep dive that looks back over 125 years of climate data, we break down how warming oceans are powering wilder weather on the land. And as the climate continues to warm, the world's oceans are acting as a battery — storing heat and releasing it.
It's getting worse: The past 11 years have been the hottest on record for our oceans. Professor Matt England from the UNSW says carbon emissions are to blame. "The fact that the oceans absorb heat, you kind of think that's a good thing. But there's payback."

The latest ABC reporting on the Israel-Gaza War
|
Intercepted: The Israeli Navy has intercepted an international aid flotilla bound for Gaza. Activists on board the 49 vessels included Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. The flotilla was carrying small quantities of aid and aimed to deliver it to the war-torn region.
In Gaza: Israel has intensified its bombardment of Gaza City, as Hamas weighs up whether to accept or reject Donald Trump's peace plan
. In the Palestinian enclave, one resident says he and others "are waiting for death, or perhaps relief from God and for the truce to come".
'International Stabilisation Force': It is one of the most crucial parts of Mr Trump's plan to bring an end to the almost two-year-old war in Gaza. But as our Middle East correspondent Eric Tlozek explains, that force could also be one of the biggest challenges to finding peace.

Here's what else is making headlines
|
- Jane Goodall: The renowned conservationist who pioneered groundbreaking chimpanzee field research, has died at the age of 91. The United Nations is among those paying tribute this morning to a lifetime spent devoted to education and advocacy.
- Corporate tax: The number of large companies paying no tax this financial year compared to last has declined, the Australian Tax Office says. But that progress is at risk
after a global minimum tax deal between developed nations was torn up by Donald Trump.
- Tariffs explained: As the ATO navigates a rapidly shifting tax landscape, the US president is also moving quickly to make his mark on global trade. So which industries has Donald Trump targeted with his tariffs? We break down his levies on everything — including the kitchen sink — and what that will mean for prices at the check-out.
- Pension age reforms: The age of retirement only ever seems to go up, but there are now new calls for some industries to receive special carve outs. That's because some workers with more physically demanding jobs are
being forced to retire well before 67, increasing their financial and health hardships.

Quote of the day
|
| "[We tried] the funny moustache, big fat nose and glasses…. a Guy Fawkes mask, happy face, sad face, things like that."
| |
— How easy is it to get around Australia's looming social media age ban? A new study is giving us an idea.
Professor Shaanan Cohney
from the University of Melbourne says that while many of the team's more outlandish ideas were not always successful, a more realistic "old man" mask (fetching anywhere from $20 to $50 online) was able to fool face scanning tools.

One more thing … a helping hand
|
And finally, year 7 students at a Port Macquarie school have used 3D printing and a good helping of teamwork to complete an unusual group assignment: giving one of their classmates a new hand.
Lois Agnello, who was born with only part of her left hand, was blown away by how well it worked, and now she and her fellow schoolmates are setting their sights on helping others in need.
