Our team's events at IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 - staggeringly, almost one in every fifteen events being held during the Exhibition - range from advocating for sustainable financing for PCAs, to strengthening human rights-based approaches, to harnessing innovating technology, to strengthening capacities of local actors, and beyond. The diversity of our work reflects the diversity of needs if we are to truly have an impact in advancing fair and effective protected and conserved areas.
Then there are protected and conserved areas themselves. As we hurtle towards 2030, the bigger picture of a protected planet may still feel like a jigsaw puzzle just out of the box - we see a staggering array of conservation models, but there is much work still to do to help each find their place. Fair and effective area-based conservation, in its many forms, is at the heart of species conservation, sustainable management of community lands and commons, water management, climate change, and every other element that we are working to conserve. There is no protected planet without conserved and protected areas.
And finally, the IUCN Congress itself is about bringing together the diverse parts of the conservation world to unite for nature and set the agenda for the next four years and beyond. Summits for Business, Indigenous Peoples and Philanthropy; convergences of tech leaders, influencers, and government ministers; IUCN Commissions, environmental NGOs, civil society, and academia – the IUCN Congress gathers the full spectrum of the conservation agenda. Everyone has a crucial role to play; together we form a powerful community.
