Mayor Catherine Read presented proclamations acknowledging Sept. 15-Oct. 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month and October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Pedestrian Safety Month in the City of Fairfax.
Consent Agenda
- Approved a resolution to reappropriate general/operating, capital, and enterprise funds carryover to Fiscal Year 2026 that were appropriated in FY 2025 and have not yet been spent as of June 30, 2025. The year-end adjustment to the general fund fell below the 1% threshold and did not require a public hearing.
- Introduced a draft ordinance amending various provisions in the city’s personnel ordinance relating to the treatment of accumulated contributions for non-vested participants. The ordinance proposes that if a non-vested participant does not elect either a lump-sum payment or a rollover within 90 days of separation, the city will automatically distribute the employee’s accumulated contributions after the 90-day period. The proposed changes will reduce the administrative burden on city staff. A public hearing will be held on Oct. 14.
- Appointed city resident Emilio Alanso to the Fairfax City Parks Foundation Board. Alanso’s appointment as the fifth director was the final step in the foundation becoming an independent organization.
- Appointed Nelson Stewart as the public safety employee representative alternate to the City of Fairfax Retirement Administrative Committee.
- Reappointed Robert Beaty to the Board of Architectural Review.
- Appointed Michael Breslin to the Board of Zoning Appeals.
- Appointed Michelle Nguyen to the Economic Development Authority.
- Appointed Derek Fuzzell to the Northern Virginia Community College Board.
- Appointed Tassos McCarthy to the Planning Commission.
-
- Reappointed Jamil Ahmed to the Retirement Plan Administrative Committee.
Work Session
- Discussed an ordinance amending the city code pertaining to the prohibition on the possession, carrying, or transportation of firearms, ammunition, or components or combination thereof, in city buildings or facilities, on public property, or at permitted public events.
The proposed ordinance would align the city’s existing regulations prohibiting firearms in specified locations to more closely match those in Fairfax County by adding a prohibition where city-permitted events are occurring (and surrounding areas) and increasing the penalty for violations, as well as some technical amendments. A public hearing will be held on Oct. 14, with consideration on Oct. 28.
A city council work session is scheduled for Oct. 7. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday nights in City Hall. Watch meetings live on Channel 12 (COX/Verizon) and online, or catch a replay at 10 a.m. or 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Visit the city meetings website.
