When I hung up the phone my heart sank as I thought about my mother, thousands of miles away. Her health had been steadily declining since we’d seen her during our last vacation. I reminded myself that we’d enjoyed her twenty-two years longer than the doctors had predicted. But I still found it hard to imagine my world without her.
With my birthday a week away, Mom had taken over the conversation that day, reliving every detail of my birth. I completely understood what those birthing memories meant to my mother because, when my children’s birthdays rolled around each year, I always revisited every detail of their births. That’s what mothers do.
