Good morning. Our editorial this past Sunday looks again at Brandon Johson's tax-laden budget and the likelihood it will scare businesses out of Chicago just when we need them. We argue that both the business community and smart aldermen have to fight against some of these new taxes while there still is time. Our sense, as we write, is that the struggle is not going to be easy. But it's essential, we argue. Which political party do Americans feel will most take care of their needs? Neither, according to new polling suggesting the two-party system has caused widespread disillusionment. We take a look at that. Gold has been rising like crazy these last few months, a boon for folks with coins, bars or jewelry but maybe worrying for the economy as a whole. Today the editorial board takes a look at the pluses and minuses of gold as an investment and weighs the risks that the big boom is coming to an end. Also in the department of advice for living: we have a wise-headed piece about cancer detection that just might change when and why you head to see your doctor. Sunday, our architecture columnist Edward Keegan took a preliminary look at the Obama Presidential Center, rising in Hyde Park. It's a very interesting analysis of a work in progress and Ed argues, in essence, that this will be a most atypical building in our city of great architecture. If you live in the Northwest suburbs, you'll want to read our editorial on a crazily expensive proposal for the renovation of school buildings. How much and where? It's a shocker so check it out below, especially if you pay property taxes that already are rising faster than your paycheck. All that and a blistering condemnation of federal agent's treatment of journalists. This was a busy, fervent weekend. We hope you were able to take some time in the nice weather. — Chris Jones, editorial page editor Submit an op-ed | Submit a letter to the editor | Meet the Tribune Editorial Board | Subscribe to this newsletter *Editor's note: Scott Stantis' cartoons will return next week. |
