Meet Lynne Shapiro, Domestic and Sexual Violence Services Hotline Volunteer
“In the past five years, due to news stories and the media in general, domestic violence has become a focus. I came to the realization that being safe in home and work environments was nothing to take for granted and was bothered by the fact that so many people did not have that basic comfort,” says Hotline volunteer Lynne Shapiro. “As I was searching one day on the Fairfax County volunteer website, I came upon the DSVS opportunities. Kinship Symposium: Promoting Family Bonds for Life
The 10th Annual Kinship Symposium took place on Friday, September 26 in Crystal City. It can only be described as heartwarming and inspiring for everyone in attendance. Participants were captivated by the keynote speaker Terry Harrak. The youth panel shared their blessings and struggles. It was a meaningful day filled with powerful stories, and it lived up to the conference theme of “Promoting kinship bonds for youth; foster care and beyond.” Learn more.

Now-Nov. 17 – Medicare 101 Workshops
Do you need to sign up for Medicare? Medicare 101 Workshops, led by the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP), are for individuals and their care partners who will soon be eligible for Medicare or have Medicare and would like to learn more about it. Register for a Medicare 101 workshop, offered virtually or in-person. In-person workshops have limited seating. Registration is required. Learn more.

Starting Tuesday, Oct. 28 – Domestic and Sexual Violence Services Fall/Winter Volunteer Orientation
Domestic and Sexual Violence Services is looking for a few good volunteers! Sign up to learn about DSVS, the services the division provides and the population it serves. Discover how volunteers can contribute to the DSVS mission and the application process. Orientation is free but registration is required. Multiple dates, starting Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025, are available. Choose the one that works best for you.
