Dr. Christine Ritter

A Message from Principal Ritter

Dear Kings Glen Families –

We are excited and honored to announce that the Virginia Council on the Educational Opportunity for Military Children voted on October 1st to approve Kings Glen Elementary School as a recipient of the SY2025-2026 Purple Star 2nd Award. The Virginia Purple Star Designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military.

Purple Star 2nd Award Designation

Kings Glen was first awarded the Purple Star Designation in 2022, and this year marks the 3-year renewal of our commitment to our military Gator families. We support our military-connected students and families through special events and other initiatives throughout the year, such as:

  • Receiving a DoDEA Grant for Code UP!, a program to enhance STEAM learning experiences.
  • Hosting a friendly family competition called the Battle of the Branches, in which students design and build “hovercrafts” and invite military families from various branches to race them!
  • Student Ambassadors provide new students, including those from military families, with a friendly face to ease their transition during their first days at their new school.

Early Release Wednesday - October 29th

Kings Glen’s next 3-hour Early Release Wednesday is Wednesday, October 29th.  Students will be dismissed at 12:25 p.m.

Positivity Project

Positivity Project at Kings Glen

Kings Glen is partnering with The Positivity Project (P2) to empower students to build positive relationships and become their best selves. During our classroom Morning Meetings, short videos, class discussions and activities focus on one of the 24 character strengths that are the foundation of Positive Psychology. Gators explore their strengths and how to have positive relationships. P2 also offers short lessons for families at home.

Impact Aid - Available NOW Through ParentVue

The Impact Aid Program is a federal program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program’s mission is to reimburse local school districts for local revenues lost due to the presence of federally owned (therefore tax exempt) property.

We need a completed and signed Impact Aid form from every child in our school, regardless of their military connectedness. Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the parent that registered the student with FCPS (the enrolling parent) can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form.  Your information will be kept strictly confidential.

To access the Impact Aid Form from your computer or mobile device, we recommend using Google Chrome.

Step 1:  CLICK HERE or type sisparent.fcps.edu into your Chrome address bar to be taken to SIS ParentVUE. If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child’s school for an activation letter.

Step 2: After you’ve logged into your ParentVue Account, look for the ‘Online Packets’ link at the top of the page. Click ‘Online Packets’.

Step 3: Next, click the ‘Federal Impact Aid Survey’ button on the bottom of the page. This will take you to the Impact Aid Survey for you to complete.

If you have multiple children in FCPS, please fill out a form for each child. You will know you have completed all of the forms when you get to the final page and see a green check next to each of their names.

When Should Your Child Stay Home?

Whether children miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child(ren) succeed by encouraging them to miss as few days as possible. However, do make sure your child stays home if sick. So when should your child stay home? Visit the FCPS website for helpful ideas regarding absences and how to work with your child and our school.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify our school and your child’s [teacher or teachers] so that assistance can be provided if needed. Keep an open line of communication with our public health nurse. Call the school as soon as you know your child will be absent and tell school staff why and for how long.

National School Lunch Week

This week is National School Lunch Week, which promotes the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has inside and outside of the classroom. View menus for your child’s school to help you plan for the week ahead.

Did you know that families can apply for free and reduced-price meal benefits anytime during the school year?

If a family’s income changes at any point, they may become newly eligible according to federal income guidelines and can apply immediately. This includes income interruptions caused by furloughs, layoffs, or job losses. Once approved, benefits remain valid for the rest of the school year and for up to 30 school days into the following school year, even if the family’s income changes again. Read Superintendent Reid's October 1 letter regarding other resources available to families impacted by the government shutdown.

Bond Referendums Support Communities

The building and renovation of Fairfax County public schools is not funded through the division’s annual operating budget. Voter-approved bonds allow payment for these projects over time. A $460 million bond referendum is on the November ballot. Read more about the 2025 Bond Referendum. Learn more about registering to vote. Make a plan to vote by Tuesday, November 4.
