Arlington for Safer Streets Report
October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and the end of daylight saving time, Sun, Nov. 2, is another reminder to be vigilant driving and walking in darker conditions. Arlington’s Vision Zero traffic safety team notes that pedestrian crashes in the dark are twice as likely to happen between the months of October-February. Arlington Families for Safer Streets has published a study covering 18 months of Near MISS/Dangerous Location reports submitted via a Near Miss survey, which collects data on driver behaviors that need improvement, including:
- “Failure to Yield” reports: 60%
- “Speeding” cited: 31%
- Location has recurring Near Miss events: 67%
- Problematic corridors: Washington, Langston & Wilson Boulevards.
The study release and local media coverage have resulted in meetings with Arlington FSS leadership and elected officials. Read and share the Arlington Near Miss Report. As pedestrians, keep your eyes UP and phone DOWN when walking and wear lighter colors in darker hours.
