We need to stop the weaponization of our government. Act now

The Department of Justice is not a tool for punishing the opposition.
Stop the weaponization of our government.

Two weeks ago, New York State Attorney General Letitia James was indicted on federal charges of mortgage fraud. The indictment came after the president himself demanded the Department of Justice (DOJ) make it a priority to prosecute James, who has pursued multiple lawsuits against both Trump administrations and the Trump Organization.

This case is just one part of a broader trend. There is a fast-growing list of political opponents the president has instructed the DOJ to investigate, including James Comey, the former director of the FBI who led the investigation into ties between Russia and Trump’s first presidential campaign. Comey was also indicted in recent weeks.

This is not “justice.” This is retribution. President Trump is bringing down the weight of the Justice Department on those who dare to stand in his way.

Meanwhile, the Justice Department shut down an investigation into the White House “border czar” Tom Homan, who was reportedly recorded accepting a $50,000 cash bribe, allegedly promising undercover FBI agents that he could help them win immigration-related government contracts under the second Trump administration.

In a democracy, the justice system should be free from politics and focused on protecting your rights. And no administration of any party should be allowed to set the law on its foes — or call it off its friends. But these punitive investigations are bringing us barreling toward an unequal justice system that acts on the whims of a single leader.

We must push back against these brazen attempts to weaponize the government against those who disagree, question, or demand accountability from the powerful. Join thousands of people in demanding that Congress check this authoritarian abuse of power and keep the Department of Justice from becoming the president’s personal law firm.

The Justice Department is not a tool for punishing opposition. And we can't let it become one.
