 |
 | | | | | | A Jamaican politician warned people on the island that recovery 'is not going to be an easy road'. Credit: Reuters | | At least 20 people have died in Haiti in flooding caused by Hurricane Melissa as the eye of the storm passed over Cuba earlier today, where flood water now fills the streets. Melissa is heading north towards the Bahamas which it is expected to hit as a "dangerous storm" in the coming hours, and after that, Bermuda late on Thursday. Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday as the highest category of storm, causing widespread devastation, the true extent of which is still being revealed due to power and phone coverage outages. BBC Verify has pieced together some of what we know. The country's PM said there have been no confirmed deaths on the island so far. |

| | | | | | | Inside Syria jail for IS suspects as officials say attacks by group rising | | | | A new generation is being raised in the camps, inheriting the brutal legacy of IS. Credit: Goktay Koraltan/BBC | | In the complex mosaic of the new Syria, the battle against the group calling itself Islamic State (IS) continues in the Kurdish-controlled north-east. Kurdish counter-terrorism officials say that IS cells in Syria are regrouping and increasing their attacks, while across the region, 8,000 suspected IS fighters and 34,000 of their family members are held in a network of prisons. |

 | | | | | The atmosphere is tense in al-Hol - a more radicalised camp where about 6,000 foreigners are being held. We were given an armed escort to enter their section of the camp. As we walked in - carefully - the sound of banging echoed through the area. Guards said it was a signal that outsiders had arrived and warned us we might be attacked.
Veiled women - clad head to toe in black - soon gathered. One responded to my questions by running a finger across her neck - as if slitting a throat. Several small children raised an index finger in a gesture traditionally associated with Muslim prayer but hijacked by IS. We kept our visit short. |
