Train Your Ears at AES: Inside the Audio University Gear Training Lab

At the Audio Engineering Society show in Long Beach, we put the new Audio University Gear Training Lab to the test. This powerful tool helps you sharpen your ear for EQ and develop a more instinctive mixing workflow.

In this week’s video, you’ll see students and pros try out the Ear Training Lab in real time, identifying frequencies, matching EQ curves, and learning how formal training builds precision while creative experimentation keeps your mixes musical. By the end, you’ll see why ear training isn’t just for beginners-it’s the foundation of every confident engineer.

Quick Tip: Analog vs Digital Wireless Explained

Analog and digital wireless systems both transmit audio, but they do it in very different ways. Analog systems use frequency modulation and rely on a compander to manage dynamic range, while digital systems transmit 1s and 0s, delivering cleaner sound and more available channels.

Analog offers virtually zero latency, while digital provides higher fidelity and greater reliability until signal loss. Knowing the tradeoffs helps you choose the right system for your stage, studio, or broadcast setup.
