Zohran Mamdani has won New York City’s mayoral race, NBC News projects, following a campaign in which the 34-year-old democratic socialist energized progressives across the country and generated intense backlash from President Donald Trump and others.

Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, on Tuesday handily defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo — who ran as a third-party candidate after losing the Democratic primary — and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
