Good afternoon. It’s Friday, Nov. 21.

In today's newsletter:

  • Anchorage schools have taken in students displaced from Western Alaska villages by Typhoon Halong. One of those schools is working to provide a sense of safety and familiarity for those students, from familiar faces to its Yup’ik language immersion program.

  • State agencies are increasingly failing to comply with state and federal laws, ranging from accounting requirements to procurement rules, Alaska's legislative auditor told lawmakers this week.

  • A task force established by city leaders earlier this year has recommended that a civilian commission provide police oversight in Anchorage.

Heading into the weekend, there's no shortage of things to do around Anchorage. Get a jump on holiday shopping at a market for Alaska-made goods, take in some live music or local theater, or cheer on the UAA basketball team at the annual Great Alaska Shootout. Check out our full events listing here.

Anchorage weather

It's overcast today with a high near 34 degrees, and the forecast calls for a wintry mix of precipitation — snow and sleet possibly mixed with freezing rain. Looking ahead to the weekend, we could see partly sunny skies on Saturday before a chance of snow on Sunday. Daytime highs will gradually drop into the mid-20s over the next few days.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
