Sheep, goat pox outbreak threatens Greek feta supply
Greece's feta cheese production faces a potential crisis as a sheep and goat pox outbreak has led to the culling of about 420,000 animals since August 2024. Although milk production has remained stable, the situation could worsen, leading to a shortage of raw materials for feta. Feta is Greece's top cheese export, generating $913 million in 2024.

The U.S. Food Waste Pact is bringing together growers, retailers and supply chain partners to reduce food waste through data-driven collaboration. A recent pilot project focused on strawberries revealed that 36% of mature strawberries went unharvested, and 9% were unsold at retail. The pilot led to new market strategies, such as bulk harvesting and rerouting out-of-spec berries to new buyers. Retailers like Walmart have also created new revenue streams by turning off-spec strawberries into products like jam. The partnership with Western Growers is expected to amplify these efforts, making the supply chain more efficient and less wasteful.
