Research in Nature Neuroscience identified microglial activation as important for amyloid-beta to promote reactive astrogliosis, amplifying neuroinflammatory responses. The research highlights the role of microglia in modulating the amyloid-driven neuroinflammation, which is a key factor in Alzheimer's disease progression. The study included 101 people who had plasma analyses of p-tau217 and glial fibrillary acidic protein, and PET imaging of amyloid-beta, translocator protein and tau, and the data were validated with an additional 251 people using soluble TREM2, a biomarker of microglial activation in the cerebrospinal fluid.
