The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Essex County is using a Harvest NY grant to connect local students to agriculture through the "Rooted in Learning" program. The initiative, led by local food educator Ellie Hoffman and public health fellow Kate Graziano, includes classroom visits, food tastings and farm trips to teach students about nutrition and the origins of their food.

School Update
 
Push continues for universal free school meals in N.D.
Lawmakers in North Dakota are evaluating the cost of a ballot proposal to provide free school meals. The Department of Public Instruction says about 126,000 students participate in the national school lunch program, with 32,000 already receiving free meals and nearly 8,000 getting reduced-cost lunches.

Quinoa is a nutritious grain alternative
Quinoa, a versatile and nutritious seed often classified as a whole grain, is gluten-free and provides protein, fiber and essential vitamins and nutrients including folate, manganese, phosphorous, iron, vitamin B1 and magnesium, making it beneficial for glucose management and overall health, according to registered dietitians Jill Weisenberger and Abby Langer and Dr. Uma Naidoo, a nutritional psychiatrist. "Unlike many other whole grains, quinoa is a great source of lysine, [an] essential amino acid that is necessary for protein synthesis," Naidoo says.

A study of nearly 20,000 children found that higher temperature exposure was linked to lower rates of achieving developmental milestones. Research published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry also showed that children in urban areas and lower-income households were especially at risk.
