Judge rules against Trump admin's Guard deployment in L.A.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 13: California National Guard members stand guard at the Wilshire Federal Building on June 13, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. A federal appeals court ruled on June 12 that the Trump administration can maintain control of the California National Guard, overturning a lower court ruling that U.S. President Donald Trump's deployment of the troops to protest-laden Los Angeles without Governor Gavin Newsom's consent was unlawful. US District Judge Charles Breyer issued a preliminary injunction against the Trump administration's deployment of California National Guard troops in Los Angeles and ordered that control of the troops be relinquished to the state. The administration acted without approval from Gov. Gavin Newsom when it deployed over 4,000 of the troops in June to assist with immigration enforcement, with several hundred troops still in the city as of late October. Breyer paused the injunction until Monday to allow an opportunity for the administration to appeal.

Justices weigh IQ issue in Ala. death-row inmate's case

The high court ruled in 2002 that people with intellectual disabilities cannot be executed. The key question in the case currently before the justices is how to address borderline cases, as Smith's scores on five IQ tests were between 72 and 78, slightly above the threshold that typically indicates intellectual disability.
