Mexico to increase water deliveries to the US
Mexico plans to increase water deliveries to the US in line with a 1944 treaty, says Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The nation is behind on water deliveries from the Rio Grande River but plans to send water this month and again in the coming years. "We have the best intention to deliver the amount of water that is owed from previous years," Sheinbaum said.

Long Island Sound sees record low hypoxic zones

Long Island Sound this summer had the smallest low-oxygen areas in nearly 40 years, with hypoxic zones peaking at 18.34 square miles, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Adrienne Esposito of Citizens Campaign for the Environment attributes the improvement to efforts to reduce nitrogen pollution, particularly through upgraded wastewater treatment facilities.

Swiss startup VunaNexus has developed a system to convert human urine into plant fertilizer, utilizing the nitrogen present in urine. Supported by the European Space Agency, the company installs small wastewater treatment systems in the basements of large buildings to process urine into Aurin, Europe's first certified urine-based fertilizer.

Ill. water system completes $157M upgrade
Illinois American Water has finished a $157 million upgrade of the Metro East regional water treatment facility, which serves more than 350,000 people. The project, which created over 1,500 jobs, included a new water storage tank, water pumps, backup power systems, a UV treatment system and other improvements to enhance service reliability and water quality.

Sullivan County, Mo., dam, spillway plan approved
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has approved plans for a dam and spillway for the Roy Blunt Reservoir in Sullivan County. The North Central Missouri Regional Water Commission can now move forward with construction of the dam and spillway, which Olsson designed.
